The Best Natural Foods that Unclog Your Arteries Naturally

90

By drumweaver

There are natural ways to unclog your arteries to prevent a heart attack or stroke...

Your arteries are the rivers within your body that continually transport essential nutrients and oxygen from your heart to the rest of your body.

A big part of staying healthy and also keeping your arteries clean and clear is related to your diet and what you eat. There’s no joke in the popular saying that says: “You are what you eat.” It just makes good sense that what you put in your body is what will reflect out in all aspects of your health.

If you eat a lot of processed foods laden with saturated fats, chemicals and toxins, all that gunk is going to cling to and clog up your arteries over time – eventually causing serious heart-related problems and other nasty stuff. You also run a high risk of suffering a heart attack or devastating stroke.

It’s been reported over and over that eating a cleaner diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables (preferably organic) can really help prevent heart disease and other life-threatening ailments – plus help scrub away built-up clogging plaque in our arteries.

There’s power in knowing that we have the choice to eat and consume healing healthy foods that can help keep us healthy and strong – especially when it comes to our heart health... we can clean our arteries naturally with everyday simple foods.

Below is a list of some very special foods that can particularly help keep your arteries clean and unclogged – these are some of the best:

Garlic…
If you don’t do anything else and want to really clean out your arteries naturally – do eat garlic and eat it regularly… eat at least 1 to 4 cloves a day. You can eat garlic raw or cooked. Garlic adds a wonderful flavouring to all kinds of recipes and is very versatile. You can include garlic in your diet in many ways – in soups and casseroles, on salads mixed with healthy olive oil as a dressing, roasted along with fresh vegetables in the oven and more.

Garlic has a long history dating back to ancient times of use in treating all kinds of heart-related diseases and hypertension. Studies have shown that high doses of garlic (2,400 mg of deorderized garlic per day) significantly lowered both diastolic and systolic blood pressure.

Also, many studies have shown that eating garlic regularly can reduce harmful cholesterol by 10 percent or more. It may also prevent blood clots from forming.

Eating 1 – 4 cloves a day is estimated to provide 4,000 mcg of allicin, one of garlic’s most beneficial compounds. If you prefer to take a garlic supplement instead of eating raw garlic because of the strong smell, look for one with the active ingredient “alliin”, because this substance is relatively odorless until it is converted into allicin in the body.

Grapes…
Red seedless grapes are a good source of lutein – a carotenoid that’s been shown to help reduce early atherosclerosis. Recent studies have shown that lutein also helps prevent thickening of the carotid artery in the neck, an indication of atherolscrosis. It also lowers inflammation of LDL cholesterol in artery walls.

Concord Grape Juice…
Both grape skin extract and grape seed extract together have excellent heart-health properties. Grape juice, made from whole concord grapes is a powerful artery-clearing wonder. It protects your artery walls from cholesterol because of some powerful, potent substances.

Found in the skin of the grape is a flavinoid called “quercetin” which acts as an antioxident to prevent LDL cholesterol from sticking on the walls of your arteries. “Resveratrol” also found in the skin, removes inflammation and blood clots. Also, “procyanidins in the seeds help keep your blood vessels clear including added antioxident properties.

A new study indicates that not only does Concord grape juice stimulated an arterial relaxation effect in a similar fashion to red wine, in fact it even induced a prolonged relaxation effect that has not yet been reported with red wine.

Dr. Valérie Schini-Kerth and a team of researchers of the Université Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg, France, found that Concord grape juice stimulated the production of nitric oxide in endothelial cells, providing a vasorelaxation effect. It is known that nitric oxide is important in the body’s natural system for maintaining healthy, flexible blood vessels and helps support healthy blood pressure.

Researchers further discovered that Concord grape juice produced this relaxation effect by stimulating the same chemical reactions in the arteries that are activated by red wine.

The beneficial effect provided by Concord grape juice lasted up to six hours, whereas this extended effect has not been reported with red wine. This research suggests that the benefits of drinking Concord purple grape juice may last long after finishing the juice.

For more info about the wonderful benefits of the Concord Grape, visit: http://www.concordgrape.org/bodyproducts-health.html

Cherries…
The tiny sweet fruit contains over 17 compounds to clear away clogged arteries of plaque even better than vitamin supplements. These compounds, found in the anthocyanins that give cherries their red colour.

Cherries hold more antioxident power than well-known vitamin C and E supplements. Plus being a whole food, you will better absorb all the wonderful nutrients including beneficial fiber which helps to lower cholesterol.

Strawberries…
Perfect to toss into your breakfast cereal, strawberries are also loaded with antioxidants, including vitamin C and E, ellagic acid, assorted carotenoid and anthocyanins. They can cut cholesterol levels by 10 percent. Try to buy organic strawberries as they tend to be heavily sprayed with pesticides.

Apples and Grapefruit...
Both of these fruits contain pectin, a soluble fiber that lowers cholesterol. It has been shown in animal studies that pectin will slow down the progression of atherosclerosis and the clogging of arteries.

Apples are a rich source of “quercetin” including potassium and magnesium – minerals that keep your blood pressure under control. A French study found that eating two apples a day can help prevent and reverse “hardening” of the arteries. Red Delicious and Granny Smith varieties of apple are also rich in procyanidins.

Sweet Potatoes…
Full of cholesterol-lowering fiber, potassium, beta carotene, folate and vitamin C, Sweet Potatoes help to lower your blood pressure and keep your arteries clear.

Green Tea…
Drinking just one cup a day will give great antioxident protection. The flavinoids in green tea are known as “polyphenols” – which are powerful antioxidents that may be greater than or equal to that of Vitamin C and vitamin E.

Healthy green tea also contains “procyanidins”, which also help prevent blood clots forming and promote healthy “endothelium” - the tissues that line your blood vessels and heart.

Hawthorn Tea…
The extract from the hawthorn berries can calm palpitations, help restore blood vessel elasticity, ease fluid build-up in the heart, stop fatty degeneration of the heart, help dilate coronary arteries and also reduce blood pressure.

Hawthorne can be used by those already on cardiac medication and may help you decrease your dosage.

Buy a bag of organically-grown hawthorn berries at a natural food store and steep them in hot water as a tea to help your heart stay healthy. Hawthorn has not been shown to have any adverse side effects.

Olive Oil...
Omega-3 fatty acids fight inflammation by countering the inflammatory effects of omega-6, another type of fatty acid. Most people eat diets overloaded with omega-6 which is found in vegetable oils like soybean or corn oil.

Olive oil is on the list of “good” oils and a “monounsaturated” fat. Using a “cold-pressed” organic olive oil as your main source of oil may cut your risk of coronary heart disease almost in half.

Studies have show that particles of LDL (bad) cholesterol that contain monounsaturated fats (found in olive oil) are less likely to become oxidized. This is important because only oxidized cholesterol is able to stick to your artery walls and form plaques.

Also, avocados and nuts like almonds are other good sources monounsaturated fat that help to clean your arteries.
And, a tip re oil... don't use Canola Oil... it's known as a GMO oil and not good. I will post more on this soon...

But just remember, fat is still fattening – so, go easy to not eat too much. A good strategy is to avoid the bad fats like the cookies, ice-cream, red meats, salt-laden cheeses and butter and replace them with the healthier unsaturated fats.

Salmon…
Fish, especially fatty fish like salmon, herring and tuna have some of the best source of omega-3 fatty acid nutrients. The American Heart Association recommends including two fatty-fish meals a week in your diet.

Wild salmon, in addition to tasting great is really rich in the omega-3 good fats, which makes the blood less likely to clot within your arteries, thus preventing cholesterol from becoming damaged or oxidized. (Farmed salmon is not recommended because it is full of toxins and far less omega-3s).

A nice combination for dinner is to include salmon and spinach – which will give you plenty of omega-3 fats, vitamin C and vitamin A, which are all very good for your arteries.

Note: It’s recommended to limit your consumption of tuna and halibut as they are known to have more toxins present being “deep-water” fish – salmon is definitely better.

Spinach…
Vitamin C and vitamin A which help prevent cholesterol from becoming “oxidized” will help to prevent clogging plaque from building up in your arteries. Spinach is also chocked full of Vitamin C and A.

Swiss Chard…
This leafy-green alternative is an excellent source of vitamin E, another antioxidant which helps prevent free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol. Eating a diet rich in vitamin E has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of developing clogged arteries.

Tomatoes…
Tomatoes are rich in carotenoid lycopene, an antioxidant that can significantly lower your risk of atherosclerosis nearly in half. Tomato juice, soup and ketchup (low sodium choices) give you a more-concentrated form than fresh tomatoes.

Also, antioxident-rich tomatoes may make LDL cholesterol much less susceptible to becoming oxidized – being a first step in the formation of artery-clogging plaque formation which is a major risk factor for heart disease.

Garbanzo Beans…
All beans contain both important soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, but garbanzo beans are one of the best – which help to remove cholesterol-containing bile from your body. They are also known to help prevent heart disease.

So, happy eating folks! As time goes by, I will add to this list – so, I invite you to visit again soon... I wish you all great heart health!
Most sincerely, weaver...

interesting. I remember vividly reading prevention magazine about 20 years ago that vitamin C was number one. Medical advances and more testing changed that I guess. No problem, though. As my favorites I use almost daily are there; grapes and garlic.

Thanks for your comment... i guess i see vitamin C as a vitamin... not a "whole food" as such... tho' vitamin C is truly wonderful and very beneficial... but whole foods are so much more absorbed more readily into our bodies because our bodies recognize whole foods... vitamins absorb much less because the body sees vitamins almost as a "foreign" substance not being a whole food - absorbing maybe around 2-5% at the best of times... so, why not get the best you can get - i recommend eating natural whole foods which can absorb up to 90%... kind of saying i guess... more bang for your buck!

Thank you for the wonderful comments and for visiting my hub...

Tuna is a great and nutritious food... however, I have learned that because Tuna is a deep water fish that these fish tend to have more heavy metal toxins in their meat... the same with Halibut too... so, it's recommended that we not eat too much Tuna - but only once in a while...

All of the foods i mention above are really good especially if you can get them in an organic form without pesticides and antibiotics… Our bodies really crave “whole foods” and absorb them so much better and more readily than foreign man-made vitamins which we hardly absorb.…

Anyway, thanks again everyone for all your wonderful comments… Have had fun putting this together… becuz i really wanted to know more for my own health... sooo glad to share to help get the word out!

And, also, thanks for your note Joe too... wondered if you’ve heard about Isagenix at all?... never have i ever received such a result from such a simple nutritional (cleansing & replenishing) program... i believe it's definitely from eating this dense micro-nutrient rich organic food – which i believe is really feeding my body finally… I don’t crave the filler-foods and junk much anymore – yeah!...

A very useful information for healthy heart. Natural food remedies are very much better than statin drugs which have so many side effects.

Douglas 19 months ago

Our family doctor usually gets his patients to try some natural remedies before pills. To keep arteries unclogged and flexible, he suggests that after each meal, take three teaspoons of pure lemon and three teaspoons of non-sugar honey sprinkled with cinnamon. Do not eat or drink anything else for an hour. Make this a regular routine every day. If you cannot do this after lunch because of working or school, then doing this after breakfast and dinner is the next best thing. The combination of pure lemon juice, non-sugar honey, and cinnamon have other good health benefits too. This doctor also suggests eating good healthy meals.

Could lemons squeezed in water be good too for arteries? There is a lot of C in them so was curious. I know its a good cleanser.

drumweaver profile image

drumweaver Hub Author 15 months ago

thank you everyone for your wonderful comments and replies...

my reply to donna... is this... doing anything natural will take time - also depending on how well one is being consistent... it took a long time for our arteries to get clogged up and it's not going to be overnight to unclog them either... plus, everybody's body is different, so one can't predict how long it would take.. nor would i want to guess or predict that..... the suggestion is to get back to a clean and natural diet as much as possible and to stop eating the stuff that clogs us up..

and to reply to stephanie.... thanks for adding your note about lemons...i'm sure lemons (and limes) would assist as well because they are so cleansing on many levels... also...

lemons and limes are acidic fruits... But what's really wonderful is that when we eat and ingest lemons and limes, the transformation that occurs within our body actually becomes alkaline... and, how cool is that?

in my own research, i found out that lemon and lime juice promote the release of natural sodium bicarbonate from the pancreas to support much-needed enzyme activity.

Also, lemon and/or lime juice converts to potassium citrate within the intestines - which is also very alkalizing! ... and alkaline foods are very beneficial to the body...

blessings to you all...

Thank all who made responses. I have a clogged carotid artery; my doctor put me on Crestor. I believe in natural healing so I haven't taken it. I am starting to eat garlic every day and also lemon juice every morning. Anyone else have this problem

Thank yu

medavinci 8 months ago

I eat almost everything on the list, and I, too have a 40% blockage in my right carotid artery and 100% blockage in my left renal artery with a thickened right ventricle due to uncontrolled blood pressure issues stemming from the renal artery stenosis. No one eats more garlic than I do, so I have to say that doesn't or hasn't worked for me. I was always 103 lbs even after having a 10lb baby (with only 27 lb weight gain during my pregnancy at age 42!). However, menopause, and my family history of heart disease (my dad's side all the men died at age 69 - scares me to death - of heart attacks).

You also have to be careful of grape concord juice only because of all the sugar. Sugar is known to cause blocked arteries. That's a fact, so people who think perhaps it comes from fat, should realize it also comes from sugar!

My LDL cholesterol was 130 and my dr wants it at 70 due to my blocked arteries. I, too, refuse to take statins, so i use plant sterols 500 mg, and benecol chews which you can buy on amazon and only have 20 calories. They contain plant STANOLS which are what reduce cholesterol in menopausal women. Plant sterols stop working after menopause. My endocrinologist went to a lipid conference and gave me the info. My cholesterol went from 240 to 193 so it does work.

As for blood pressure, mine was at 170/120 at its highest and the more stressed I became over it, the higher it went. They tried me on the lowest dose of every bp med known to man and each and every time I wound up in the ER with bp readings of 250/135. I stepped back and went to Cornell-Weill hospital in NYC. I had called the head of the cardiac unit after looking into the renin-aldosterone connection, since my high bp came out of the blue. I had had normal tests 6 mos prior (ekg, holter monitor, 24 hr bp monitor, carotid ultrasound and stress test - I always did this prophylactically due to my father's heart history. I also had a cardiac heart scan with a 0 calcium score). My cardiologist just wrote it off as old age! I said I know my body; it's something else. After researching renin-aldosterone, I saw that Dr. Laragh was Time's Man of the Year in 1976 for the discovery of the above. I didn't even know if he was still practicing, but found his name in the Cornell directory (semi-retired) so I emailed him, and his secretary called me immediately and had me make an appt with the cardiac center in NYC.

I was supposed to see one dr but he had to fly overseas, so I got his partner. Talk about coincidences...the dr spent 2.5 hrs with me. I had all my blood work, copies of my MRA that I had done after having a renal doppler ultrasound (which dr laragh told me to ask for and my cardiologist would never have ordered). He spoke gently with me and out of the blue asked if I had ever been abused. What? I had. I had been in a marriage fraught with abuse for 27 yrs. He wrote a book called "healing hypertension" and he said "you are in this book." His theory was stress and trauma were driving the bp up....I tried atenolol but I had a paradoxical reaction (I was on the lowest dose and I was up for 2 days straight, had no appetite, was spaced out and hyper)! So in the end, I wound up on xanax. It has controlled my bp for 2 yrs now, but my diastolic can run high at times. I have 3 machines, all calibrated in one cardiologist's office, however, in my neurologist's office, my bp is always 120/80. Never varies so go figure. I am paradoxical all the way around - most people's bp rises in the dr's office!

I am using lecithin granules (not the oil) to help clear the arteries as well and I drink pomegranate juice which is as good as if not better than concord grapes. I add vit C to it (about 5000 mg) in 8 oz. I don't go above 8 oz only because of the sugar. Be careful with vit C as well, as that and calcium (especially calcium!) can cause kidney stones. My mom, who had end stage COPD, developed massive ones from being on 1500mg of calcium per day (tablets) and she died trying to pass one. The pain was just too much. I do not take calcium. I eat broccoli or kale for the calcium naturally.

You will know, too, when you are taking too much vit C when you start to get diarrhea. As for curative spices, I used cayenne pepper, cumin and tumeric daily (anti inflammatory) and I take L-carnitine liquid and omega-3 liquid along with 5000mg of vit D (which if deficient in your body, can cause heart problems, so ask for a blood test for it from your dr to measure your levels). I also take 200mg of CoQ10, magnesium, garlic oil as well as fresh garlic, shallots (they prevent blood clots even more so than onions), and astaxanthin 4mg (dr mercola says its a cure all), and for my blood pressure 1000mg (500mg 2x/day) of niacin (the one that makes you flush) per Dr Sinatra's book (he believes you need to work up to 3000mg a day for it to have an effect). I'm also going to look into the Linus Pauling treatment as well.

We do what we can, and try a bunch of different things hoping something will work!
